"Creating a Lasting Legacy" L Holding's Chairman Wee Kuang Tai on doing business and planting roots for the future
"Leaving a lasting legacy is more than just accomplishing great things," a wise man once said. "When you treat people well and build a reputation of integrity, you'll set a powerful example for leaders to come. You reap what you sow."
The Chairman of L-Holding Group, Wee Kuang Tai MLJ RNA MNA, finds all of this to be true. By utilising green energy, this enigmatic and highly successful businessman hopes to "make the world a better place" and leave a lasting impression.
To help better understand this international businessman with a passion for the environment and communities, Wee Kuang shares his humble beginnings, his path to success, role models, and future plans.
How did you get started in the business?
WKT: I started my career in IT, working for a sizable multinational corporation in Singapore's rapidly expanding IT sector for five years. I slowly started to cultivate my entrepreneurial spirit after working and moving up the corporate ranks in the organisation. Then, in 2007, I made the leap by using my own funds to launch a small IT programming company.
How did you manage to expand your empire so rapidly?
WKT: I developed my business and entrepreneurial skills during the ups and downs of the economic cycle. I was pleased to see that after more than ten years of nurturing the business, it had grown into a successful and well-respected company, with customers primarily in China but also in Singapore and other Southeast Asian countries.
Eventually, my entrepreneurial spirit drove me to pursue other endeavours where I worked in real estate development, pharmaceutical retail, and distributing medical products. These companies started to expand steadily over the next few years.
Right now, I'm engaged in several business ventures, such as selling pharmaceuticals in Malaysia, developing real estate from Asia to Europe, and retailing luxury goods. L-Energy, our energy engineering solutions consultancy and solar/photovoltaic project construction business, is also progressing well across the markets it serves.
Why are you interested in green energy?
WKT: I want to dedicate myself to a higher cause after achieving financial and professional success. I want to try and make the world a better place overall, and that starts with the environment. Therefore, I'm paying particular attention to that.
We are planning and constructing high-quality green homes across Britain through L Holding and To Be Properties UK. Our energy-efficient and environmentally friendly residential projects will meet the market's housing demand as a result of the growing energy crisis and increased need for power efficiency across the UK today.
All I want to do is try to make a difference and leave a lasting impression.
Who are the people you look up to in terms of leadership?
WKT: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who has exemplified perseverance and enduring leadership throughout her life, has my utmost respect and admiration. We were so thrilled to be chosen as an official partner for the 2022 worldwide celebrations of The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Beacons.
I firmly believe in the "giving back to society" philosophy. We contributed to numerous deserving causes across the UK and provided modest township schools in Malaysia with scholarship grants.
In recognition of his significant dedication to community service, Wee Kuang Tai's philanthropic work has earned him memberships in the Order of Saint Lazarus (MLJ), Royal Naval Association (RNA), and Merchant Navy Association (MNA). He is also a lifetime member of the Royal Society of St George and is expected to receive a knighthood from the Order of St Joachim later this year.
Where do you see L-Holding in the coming years?
WKT: I truly believe our business can contribute to making the world a better place by offering markets and communities green energy alternatives and solutions--the sooner the better.
By 2030, we want to expand our business and solidify our position, especially as a leading EPC player in green-energy engineering and an eco-building solutions consultancy. We plan to continue to grow primarily in markets throughout Asia, as our roots are here, as well as explore new opportunities in new markets like the UK and Europe.
We want to start by setting an example. First, by constructing high-quality homes that are eco-friendly and heavily integrated with renewable energy technologies. The UK is currently experiencing one of the worst energy crises in the country's history, with many people having to choose between heating their homes or putting food on the table.
We have both the technology and knowledge today; why not deploy it efficiently and bring homeowners reliable and efficient eco-solutions in homes that make sense and are future-ready?
By integrating solar, wind, and ground-sourced energy, which are at the core of L-Energy's services, we can help households meet new energy laws and standards. This new legislation will come into effect for new homes across the UK. New residential buildings must produce 30% less CO2 than required by the current standards.
As such, L-Energy and our businesses at L Holding Limited are constantly searching for cross-border partnerships and alliances that share our passion for advancing people's lives through the implementation of green projects and creating a lasting legacy together.
What motivates you to continue working despite your success?
WKT: The desire to leave behind something that will endure and stand the test of time. My goal is to raise awareness of the importance of responsible capitalism and planned consumerism in the current global environment.
I firmly believe that when conducting one's business or work, one should seriously consider what impact our businesses will have and also work to compel the organisations we deal with to contribute back to society and the community that we collectively operate in. Lastly, to take into account how businesses impact the environment and reduce their carbon footprint.
I hope that our company, from management to our staff, will find meaning in their work and leave a truly lasting legacy for future generations.
